Ghana Culture & History tour

Our recommended tour route in Ghana

This is a great tour showcasing some of the best experiences in Ghana. Starting in Accra we travel inland to Kumasi, heart of the Ashanti Kingdom, and then along the slave trail to Cape Coast before finally returning along the coast to Accra. History, culture, traditional villages and beautiful beaches are all experienced.

We recommend 10 days, as illustrated below, but have done this trip in as few as 6 days with some small changes. This tour can easily contain any parts of the Western Coast tours, the Ashanti Kingdom tours or any of the Greater Accra trips. With more time, you can add to this basic triangle and explore further into these areas, or add excursions into the Volta Region or the Northern Regions.

African dress 2 nights Accra Arrive in Accra. City orientation. Visit museums, Makola market and Independence Square.
1-2 nights Volta River Explore the tranquility of the scenic Volta River in a local canoe or a motorboat. Socialize in a river village and visit a banana plantation or Volta Lake, the world's 2nd largest man-made lake.
2-3 nights Kumasi Traditional villages to see Kente cloth weavers, woods carvers and a cocoa farm. Enjoy Kumasi, heart of the Ashanti Kingdom. Tour Manhyia Palace, home of the Ashanti King and Kejetia Market, the largest outdoor market in Ghana. Optionally visit waterfalls and a monkey sanctuary.
Cape Coast castle 2 nights Cape Coast Follow the slave route to Cape Coast, visiting a memorial at the Slave River. Tour Cape Coast castle and contemplate the history of this beach. Morning visit to the rain forest canopy walkway at Kakum National Park. Crocodile ponds or birding hikes possible.
1 night Accra Return to Accra to finish your last minute shopping. Visit an unplanned neighborhood. Receive a traditional blessing for a safe journey.
