Overview
A 2 day marine birding excursion east from Accra to where the Volta River empties into the Gulf of Guinea. Visit two of Ghana's important birding sites and various Volta River islands and villages. Includes a nocturnal marine turtle expedition during the nesting season from August to February.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Sakumono Lagoon, Songor Lagoon, Turtle Expedition
- Morning pick-up in an air-conditioned vehicle: Accra location of your choice
- Birding at the Sakumono Lagoon, near an urbanized area of the port city of Tema. This is a Ramsar wetland site of importance with over 260 species.

- Afternoon visit to the Songor Lagoon, the largest natural salt mining facility in Ghana.
- Late afternoon birding for wintering European birds and resident marine species.
- Continue east to Ada, where the Volta River empties into the Gulf of Guinea.

- Nocturnal marine turtle expedition to search for these increasingly rare animals.
- Overnight at a luxury resort on the banks of the Volta River
Day 2
Morning Birding, Volta River Estuary, Fishing Village, Beach Relax
- Early morning birding by canoe among the islands in the Volta Estuary.
- Explore the islands and the morning Volta River traffic of fishermen and clam divers.
- Visit the basket weavers and the local rum distillery on Aflive Island.
- Return to the mainland and explore the fishing village of Ada Foah.
- Walk the maze-like village paths from Ada Foah to the Volta River estuary.
- Spend the rest of the day at the riverside to relax and socialize with locals.
- Return drive to Accra, departing Ada by 4:00 PM at the latest.
- Drop at location of your choice in Accra
