Two day birding tour of Ghana visiting the Xavi bird sanctuary and the ocean-facing Keta Lagoon, a Ramsar birding site of major importance in Ghana. Includes an overnight on a sandbar between the ocean and the Keta lagoon, a late night marine turtle expedition, architectural and cultural sites.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Xavi Bird Sanctuary, Keta Birding, Marine Turtle Expedition
- Morning pick-up in an air-conditioned vehicle: Accra location of your choice.
- East along the coast, crossing the Volta River near where it empties into the ocean.
- Xavi bird watching sanctuary, the 2nd largest lagoon in the area.
- Canoe with a local birding guide on the Lotor River, which feeds the Avu Lagoon.
- Tosukpo ecotourism site for village tour. Watch distilling of Akpeteshie (local gin).
- Optional cultural drumming and dance performance telling local history (extra fee).
- Continue to Keta for late afternoon birding at this rewarding marine birding site.
- Nocturnal marine turtle expedition to search for these increasingly rare animals.
- Overnight at an upscale resort on a clean sandy beach.
Day 2
Keta Lagoon, Fort Pridzenstein, Cape St. Paul Lighthouse
- Early birding at Keta lagoon which is Ghana's most important marine birding site.
- Canoe ride on the lagoon or use the bird watching lookout at Woe.
- Birds are abundant year-round, with enormous flocks during the European winter.
- Mid-morning exploration of the sandbar between the lagoon wetlands and the ocean.
- Tour Fort Pridzenstein, which was used as a prison during colonial times.
- The Cape St. Paul lighthouse is located at the site of Ghana's first lighthouse.
- Beach relaxation or swimming in the ocean or the freshwater lagoon.
- Depart on your return to Accra before 15:00 at the latest to arrive before nightfall.
- Drop at location of your choice in Accra.
